North House Folk School Shavings Newsletter
A 6,000-mile journey from Mongolia to Hungary on horseback, the analog act of hand-carving a spoon, and venturing into the woods to harvest birch bark to build a canoe--these were just a handful of the topics covered in Shavings. North House members receive the member newsletter, twice yearly. The 13-page piece shared the rich stories of craft, including interviews with visiting international instructors, repurposed content from event speakers' books and blogs, and inspiring student stories. My job: Create editorial plan, design and layout, write and solicit/edit content, edit photos, send to print. I produced 13 issues from 2010 to 2016.
Challenges: Narrowing down the vast array of story possibilities and making them fit into only two issues each year.
Perks: Connecting with everyone from internationally-famed speakers and instructors to craft class students to share the vast reach of craft across the globe.
